Community Spirit was Alive at Discover Marcellus Fall Festival
Despite cold temperatures and a little spot of rain, the third annual Greater Marcellus Community Chamber
DISCOVER Marcellus Fall Festival was a success!
“This is wonderful what is happening here,” said Marcellus Optimist Kathy Kusnierczyk.
For the first time, local school and community groups came together to create
MUSTANG MIDWAY—a series of simple, fun carnival games with all the
proceeds going to help kids and the community.
“We’ve had a wonderful response. This is why Marcellus is such a great place
to live,” explained Discover Marcellus Fall Festival organizer and Greater
Marcellus Community Chamber Board Member Mary Merritt of Marcellus.
“Next year we’re hoping all the school, church and non-profit groups in the
area get an original game going and come out to raise money and build
awareness for their organization.”
The MUSTANG MIDWAY games were along the closed section of Slocombe Avenue. Groups sponsoring games
with all the money raised going to non-profit causes included: The Marcellus Parent Nursery School, Marcellus
Lacrosse Teams, Marcellus Baseball Team, Marcellus Optimists, Boy Scout Troop #66, Cub Scout Troup #166,
Friends of Marcellus Park, Crowhill Hardwoods raising money for the Junior Prom Committee, Greater Marcellus
Community Chamber, Young Life, Chocolate Pizza Company raising money for Friends of Marcellus Park, and
MGM Word Studio, Inc. raising money for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life.
The games ranged from shooting baskets, knocking down bowling pins, tossing a ball in a bucket, a soda bottle ring
toss, to trying your hand at shooting a lacrosse ball and trying to bat away a whiffle ball.
Members of The Marcellus Varsity Football Team volunteered to help run the games on MUSTANG MIDWAY. The
volunteers were #60 Jesse Marshall; #55 Jim LaRose; #52 Charles Jones, his mother, Sharon; #73 Greg Kelly; #32
Zac Flinch;; #51 Marshall Merritt, his brother, Duncan and his neighbor, Paula Sanzo; #40 Matt Barstow; #54 Dan
Wheeler; #81 Ryan Carey and Josh Fellows.
Kathy Barstow of Marcellus won the Greater Marcellus Community Chamber’s 50/50 drawing.
Musical entertainment for the Discover Marcellus Fall Festival was sponsored by James P. Reagan Insurance
Agency. The popular Dixieland band, The Soda Ash Six played vintage and contemporary tunes New Orleans style
top an autumn-decorated flatbed truck donated by Welch Construction. Jim and Kim LaRose of Marcellus donated
cornstalks, hay bales and pumpkins for the event.
Planning is already underway for next year’s Greater Marcellus Community Chamber Discover Marcellus Fall
Festival and MUSTANG MIDWAY. The event will be part of Marcellus Schools’ Homecoming Weekend.
