Water Works
by Ellen Leahy

Marcellus’ Superintendent of Public Works
Don MacLachlan and his crew built a series of
cross beams and J hooks - in Nine Mile Creek
over the past two years. These appear as tiny
waterfalls.

The project was designed by Carl Schwarz of
the DEC and was started with a grant from
Congressman Walsh. The purpose
is to stop erosion by directing water to the
middle of creek. “Instead of lining creekbeds
with cement and rock, this forces the water to
the middle, catching the sediment,”
MacLachlan said. “The process also creates
deep pools for trout.”
