Worship
Participatory and collaborative worship make Marcellus First Presbyterian Church a unique and enjoyable experience. There is just the right balance between reverence and personal sharing as we freely share joys and concerns for the Pastoral prayer. Laypersons are encouraged to participate by leading in each service for worship. We welcome everyone and therefore call ourselves a More Light Congregation.
Music is an important part of our worship as it helps to bring meaning to the service. Our music staff and volunteer choir members are an inspiration to us all. Nursery care is provided.
We celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is recognized usually in a service for worship and may be arranged by calling the pastor.
Communion is generally celebrated on the First Sunday of each month. All those who claim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are invited to participate in communion. Our elders and Deacons deliver communion to those hospitalized and homebound. Please contact the church office at 673-2201 to arrange delivery of communion.
Mission and Outreach
We are always looking for ways to be involved in peacemaking, relief of hunger, Border Ministry, and the One Great Hour of Sharing. These are only a few of the ways we believe ourselves called to serve Christ in our world.
We also serve dinners several times a year at the Samaritan Center for the Homeless in Syracuse.
Our building also houses a local childcare program and the Ecumenical Food Pantry.
Taking a stance against discrimination in all its forms, we are a More Light Church, which means that we welcome all who profess Jesus Christ, regardless of age, gender, racial ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other form of discrimination.
Study Activities
Study is a very important aspect of our life together as Christians. We seek God’s will through study, prayer, and the discernment process. The means of this study varies from year to year. Please join us on this journey we call faith by contacting the church office for the particular offerings each year (673-2201).
We offer opportunities for educational and spiritual development from Nursery through Adult Studies.
Session
We are governed by a board elected from our church’s active membership. This governing body is called the Session. The Session is comprised of twelve Elders. Elders are those active members elected by the congregation and recognized by the congregation as having skills that lend themselves to administration and spiritual care and concern. Elders serve a three-year term and may only serve six years consecutively.
Deacons
As in the time of Jesus, there are those elected to serve in the ministry of compassion. These people are called Deacons. Deacons prepare communion services and deliver them. Deacons visit and send cards to those needing particular attention, whether in this congregation or beyond. They pray for those in particular need and provide assistance upon request. Please contact the church office to arrange for Deacon care.
